Coop Himmelb(l)au's proposal for the Busan Cinema Centre and home of the Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) suggests a new intersection between public space, cultural programs, technology and architecture to create identifiable landmarks within the urban landscape.

The concept envisions an Urban Plaza of four overlapping zones including an Urban Valley, a Red Carpet zone, the Walk of Fame and the PIFF Canal Park. The zones are formed by highly recognizable building objects housing the project functions. These objects include the Cinema Mountain, the PIFF Hill, the concourse Double Cone and the outdoor amphitheatre BOWL. Roof elements acting as a Virtual Sky connect the objects and zones into a continuous, multi-functional public urban space.

The double cone is the connective element between the Cinema mountain and the PIFF hill, and the symbolic landmark entrance to the entire site. During the festival it marks the VIP entrance to the Busan Cinema Centre complex as well as to the concourse.

During the PIFF festival, or for other special events, the Red Carpet zone creates the special drop-off and media-event procession entrance. A conceptual red carpet extends from the Double Cone event space to the south through the park and along a pier. VIPS can enter from Limousines along the street edge, or arrive by boat from the pier.

The red carpet continues as a vibrant spiralling ramp from the staging level of the event space to the VIP lounge of the upper roof and to overviews of the public on the way to VIP entrances to the grand cinema in the Mountain and concourse in the PIFF Hill.

This is architecture building office of BMW Welt was designed by Coop Himmelb(l)au, located in Munich, Germany. The realization of the technical building facilities within the scope of the architecture led to a planning model with five thematic blocks: Hall,Premiere, Forum, Gastronomy.
The technical solution here is based on previous experience with large halls. All of the necessary features were realized successfully according to a low-tech concept. The interrelations of daylight and artificial light with ambient climate and acoustics influence people’s feeling of well-being in the Hall.
The concept for the technological building systems takes up these relationships and integrates them in an interdependent manner, adapting their range of influence by modifying their dimensions or building in appropriate control mechanisms. A major goal in designing the systems was to save energy. This aim is achieved by minimizing the mechanical apparatus for ventilation, heating and cooling. The gigantic Hall is thus conceived as a solar-heated, naturally ventilated sub-climatic area, a multifunctional space that does not follow the otherwise customary requirements for heating and ventilation.
A natural air supply is generated by thermal currents, wind pressure and turbulences when air accumulates in the area of the facade and roof projection. Air intake and outflow take place through automatically controlled vents. The “natural aeration” system provides sufficient fresh air to the Hall.

COOP HIMMELB(L)AU “Best Building Sites”

Dalian International Conference Center in China / COOP HIMMELB(L)AU

Press Release, Vienna, 18 January 2011
COOP HIMMELB(L)AU‘s Dalian International Conference Center in China is winner of the Wallpaper* Design Award in the category “Best Building Sites”. The magazine Wallpaper belongs to the most influential international print media in the area of architecture and design, and is considered as trendsetter in the trade among architects, designers and other creatives.

The International Conference Center is situated in Dalian, an important port, industry, commercial and tourism center in the southernmost part of the Liaodong-Peninsula, in the Chinese province Laoning. The project with a dimension of 220m by 200m extends over 8 floors and combines numerous different functions within a single hybrid building on a total of 117,000 m²: a conference center, an opera house and an exhibition center as well as a basement with parking, delivery and disposal area. Wolf D. Prix, Design Principal of COOP HIMMEL-B(L)AU, describes the concept of the Dalian International Conference Center as the “idea to design a small city of conference and performance spaces beneath a shell-like roof. In the center is a grand 1,800 seats theater and opera house with stage and a flexible conference hall for 2,500 visitors.”

Coop Himmelb(l)au Architects unveil new Lyon museum

Crystal cloud of knowledge

The opening of the visitor’s pavilion at the construction site of the Musée des Confluences took place on October 8 at Quai Perrache, Lyon. The Musée des Confluences does not consider itself as an exclusive temple for the intellectual bourgeoisie but as a public place providing access to the knowledge of our age. Stimulating a direct and active use, it is not only a museum site but also a venue in town. The architecture hybridises the typology of a museum with the typology of an urban leisure space. The concept of two complexly connected architectural units are a result of the striking interface-like situation of the building site. The crystal rising towards the side of the town is conceived as an urban forum and entrance hall for visitors. Its shape that can be read clearly stands for the everyday world. In contrast to this the cloud hides the knowledge about the future; it is a soft space of hidden streams and countless transitions.
