Solid Black Walnut Floors

A rich, dark lustrous timber

Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is a beautiful, dark timber with swirling grain and a rich variety of colours.

Its strength, dark colour and outstanding beauty combine to produce an exotic floor.

Our timber is steamed to darken the wood and produce a more uniform colour.

The heartwood is light to dark brown with hues of gunmetal and purple and the wood is beautifully figured. The sapwood is normally cream to light brown if steamed but may be white.

There are four grades of flooring which reflect the varying nature of the timber and our customers needs.

Classic/Pippy Black Walnut Flooring

(128mm wide & 20mm thick. Other widths may be available.)

This is beautiful floor containing a mix of clear and figured wood with swirling grain and gentle character features. The floor contains some sound knots and character marks which blend well with the overall appearance of the wood, wild grain and figure and a few burrs.

The overall colour of the floor varies from medium brown to dark chocolate brown with shades of purple, blue, light brown with occasional stripes of very dark brown. The floor is 99.9% free of white or cream sapwood, but a little light brown steamed sapwood and all shades of heartwood are permitted. All rustic timber and boards with lots of knots are excluded. Any filling is done during production.

Dark Character Black Walnut Flooring

This is another stunning, dark floor with wild grain and a similar range of colours to the Classic Pippy Black Walnut, but containing frequent knots and character features. The knots and features are larger than in the Classic Pippy grade and there are more of them.

The darkest timber comes from near the heart of the tree and we use this timber to make this grade. This floor is also 99.9% free of white or cream sapwood, but the light brown steamed sapwood is permitted as above. Some filling may be required during installation.

Light Character Black Walnut Flooring

(128mm wide & 20mm thick. Other widths may be available.)

This is a lovely character floor which has much more colour variation together with a few knots and character features. The colour varies from ivory to mid brown with a few darker boards and hues of purple, blue and gunmetal. All shades of sapwood are permitted in this floor. In general there are less knots than in the Dark Character Walnut and the overall appearance is lighter and more gentle. Some filling may be required.

Rustic Black Walnut Flooring

Rustic grade flooring may be available in relatively small quantities - please see the price list and special offers for more details.

This floor normally contains shorter lengths, wide colour variation from white through to very dark brown, large knots, heart and some cracks which may need filling.

Density - About 650kg/Cu.m.
Hardness - About 4500N
Strong, stiff timber with good shock resistance. Mod Elasticity = 7000 Megapascals
Durable heartwood. Colour often lightens with time to resemble European Walnut.
This depends on the applied finish.
